The Inter-International Schools Under 20 Netball Tournament, hosted by Ilma International Girls’ School (IIGS) for the 9th consecutive year, will be held on the 26th of January 2019, at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. The event is open to all the schools that come under the TISSL (The International Schools of Sri Lanka) umbrella and the 2019 edition will witness the participation of eleven such institutions. It is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year and will be the first sporting event of a very busy TISSL calendar that encompasses many sports.
The schools nationwide that will compete at the event will include Asian International School, Colombo International School (Colombo), Colombo International School (Kandy), Gateway College (Colombo), Gateway College (Kandy), Lyceum International School (Panadura), Lyceum International School (Wattala), British School, Royal Institute, Burhani Serendib School and the host school, Ilma International Girls’ School. Gateway College, Colombo will defend their title that they won last year after a gripping final against Ilma International Girls’ School. The draw for the tournament took place on Thursday, the 10th of January 2019 at the Mandarina Hotel with the participation of the sports officials and the captains of the participating schools.
Undoubtedly, the event will be an opportunity for the players of all schools to showcase their athletic prowess and skillset, whilst vying for the ultimate netball championship title. However, as the host school, Ilma is very keen that it should be done in a manner which inculcates the value of sportsmanship and in a spirit of camaraderie. In an arena which could witness the fiercest of competition, it is still imperative that the players treat one another with respect, managing the emotions that come with the highs and lows of the game. Mrs Fareeda Wahab, the Principal of IIGS, stated that all players must cultivate a learning mindset. “Many young players sometimes believe that it is merely their talent that matters. However, talent combined with skill, are just part of the ingredients towards the achievement of overall success in learning and improving; not just winning”, Mrs Wahab opined.
The Platinum Sponsor of the Tournament is HUF & DEE, one of the leading ladies wear brand exclusively available at all NOLIMIT and Glitz outlets. The contribution of the sponsors, which also include Hatton National Bank – Islamic Banking Division and the American National College will go a long way towards the success of events of this nature, which form part of the holistic learning experience that educational institutions yearn for in order to complement the academic programmes that form the core aspect of all schools.
