The Senior language day for the academic year 2017/2018 was held on the 25th of October 2017, in the School Hall. Madam Nidha Abbas, (Manager Examinations – English Department, ACBT Campus) a past pupil of our school, graced the occasion with her presence as chief guest. The day was brought on by the collaboration of the of the Senior English, Tamil and Sinhala Literary Societies, led by the presidents Aeman Aslam, Aysha Matheen, and Mahira Kitchel, respectively. The theme of the day was ‘Language through Ages,’ and this was symbolized by the different shades of blue and beige. The decoration highlighted the transition of languages from when they first evolved to how they exist today.

The day officially began with the welcome song, sung by the students in united harmony. This was preceded by the Principal’s address to the audience. An array of dances to the song “La Sanda aye payala,” organized by the Sinhala Society, next captivated the audience. This was followed by a song sung in Tamil “Acham Acham Ellai.“

The next event to occupy the limelight was the English Musical, a play acted out by the students of year 10 and above. It highlighted for monumental figures in history; Anne Frank, Cleopatra, Mary Antoinette and George Elliot. The play proved to be an immense success. It showed us the importance of making important decisions – for certain decisions have made history.

The Guest of Honour, Madam Husni Hussain, delivered her speech thereafter. A thrilling display of some of Shakespeare’s best loved character next took the stage. The characters included the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, Lady Macbeth and Juliet. This was followed by a dance to the Sinhala song “Rahasai Sonduru Jeweye,” and a Tamil dance to the song “Meham Karukede,” both of which were greatly applauded by an impressed audience.

Thereafter, Madam Nidha Abbas, the chief guest for the day, delivered her speech. She emphasized on the importance of learning languages, and even highlighted her personal experience in dealing with them.

With the occasion now drawing to its climax, the audience was invigorated by the group recital of the poem “Charge of the Light Brigade,” by Alferd Lord Tennyson. This was followed by the distribution of awards.

The last event for the day was the Sinhala Folksong, which was a roaring success. Portrayed in near perfection and with its effortlessly humorous style, it was the event everyone loved the best.

The day concluded with immense success. The teachers in charge of the events were appreciated for their hard work and dedication. The students, too were appreciated for taking part in the Day and making it as success.
